The Interview with Nick Marsh

Nick was born in the sunny vale of Manchester, in North-West England, back when everyone else was busy wearing flared trousers and purple shirts. He has continued to be out of step with fashion ever since. Thanks to a certain ‘Mr Herriot’ Nick’s childhood ambition was to become a veterinary surgeon, an ambition that was only strengthened after a soul-scarring week working in the Coronation Street Shop at Granada Studios tour for his school work experience.  He still sometimes wakes at night screaming about a shelf full of Vera Duckworth mugs smashing, and to this day the sound of the Beach Boys (which was, for some reason, played in the shop on a 24-hour loop) brings him out in a cold sweat.

Several years later, after five years at Bristol University (during which time he was promoted from a lowly ‘one-pint wonder’ to an impressive ‘three-pint wonder), Nick found himself out in the real world, qualified as a vet.

Soul Purpose was written as a response to his first few years at the sharp end of veterinary life.  He now works as a small animal vet in Plymouth, and is feeling much better, thank you. If he ever wonders whether he is in the right job, he hums the first few bars of ‘I get around’ to himself, and knows that things could have been much, much worse.

First Look At Steven Spielberg’s New TV Series ‘Terra Nova’

We told you about Steven Spielberg‘s latest project, a TV series called Terra Nova, which centers around the Shannon family from the year 2149. And during the Super Bowl we got our first sneak peek at a trailer for the series.

The Shannon family lives in an overcrowded and overpopulated future where most of the plant and animal life has gone extinct (sound a little too real?). As there is no feasible way to reverse the damage to the planet caused by humans, a team of scientists open a space-time continuum portal that allows the family to travel 150 million years into the past.

What they find is Terra Nova, a world with blue skies, bountiful vegetation, and a new beginning for the travelers. But not all is as it seems, for the family is soon to find that something sinister awaits them.

Terra Nova is set to air on Monday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 24 (a two-parter) at 9 p.m. on Fox

7 sci-fi series in danger of not seeing another season

Looking forward to seeing how that alien invasion plays out on V? Having fun with the complicated capers of Human Target? Rooting for Peter and Olivia to get together on Fringe? Based on a couple of people who should know, we’d all better enjoy those shows while we’ve still got the chance!

Over at Entertainment Weekly, Lynette Rice and James Hibberd published a list of every 2010-11 broadcast show, along with its chances of survival. And it looks like a number of our sci-fi favorites are in that limbo between renewal and cancellation.

Here’s how they sorted out the sci-fi-themed shows:

SURE THINGS FOR NEXT SEASON

The Big Bang Theory
The Vampire Diaries

STRONG ODDS

Nikita

COULD GO EITHER WAY

Chuck
Fringe
Supernatural

DANGER ZONE

Human Target
No Ordinary Family
The Event
V

DEAD AND BURIED

The Cape
Medium
Smallville
We’ve got to admit—reading this list gets us nervous. We’re thinking we’d better let our friends know they’ve GOT to start watching some of these if we’re to have any hope of seeing them continue.

So what do you think of these predictions? And which sci-fi series would you miss the most?

Smallville Finale to Air May 13th

The two-hour episode will feature Darkseid

The CW has announced the schedule for the final episode of their hit series “Smallville,” which will wrap its ten-year run on May 13th with a two-hour finale at 8:00pm EST. The exact plot and title of the final episode are still under wraps, but the official press release describes the finale as follows:

The story of a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and his journey to become the Man of Steel has captivated audiences for a decade. This final season, Clark attempts to find a balance between saving the world, which becomes even more difficult as the Vigilante Registration Act separates a nation, and spending time with his new fiancée Lois Lane (Erica Durance). Whether it’s donning glasses as a disguise, changing in a phone booth or learning how to fly, this season has put Clark closer to his destiny than ever before. Taking on Darkseid and battling the darkest of his demons, this two-hour event will send Clark soaring towards his birthright to secure his place in history as the world’s greatest protector.

“Paying homage to 10 seasons is no small task, and wrapping up each character and story arc has been extremely important to everyone involved in the show,” said executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders. “We’re excited to be able to make the final moments of ‘Smallville’ a television event, as the character we’ve grown up with makes his legendary transformation.”

While fans will be disappointed to see the show leave the airwaves, they won’t have too long a wait until Henry Cavill offers a different take in the role of Clark Kent in Zack Snyder’s theatrical Superman reboot, arriving in theaters December 2012.

BIGPOINT LAUNCHES BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ONLINE;
HUMANS AND CYLONS BATTLE FOR CONTROL OF THE UNIVERSE

Tactical Space Combat MMOG Based on Syfy’s Hit Television Series Sets New Benchmark in Browser-based Gaming; Available Worldwide in Partnership with Syfy

Hamburg – February 8, 2011 – Bigpoint (www.bigpoint.com) – the global market leader in browser-based massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) – today launched Battlestar Galactica Online. Based on the internationally popular Syfy television series produced by Universal Cable Productions, Battlestar Galactica Online (http://battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/) is a free-to-play, browser-based space combat MMOG that combines high-quality, 3D graphics with intense gameplay. Following a successful closed beta period that started in late 2010, the free-to-play game can now be enjoyed by players worldwide.

David Eick, Executive Producer of “Battlestar Galactica,” said, “Bigpoint has successfully embraced the spirit of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ aggressive ship design, tactile physics, and its signature, vérité-style combat aesthetic, and taken it all to an entirely new level. Playing this game is like watching the most highly-adrenalized, nail-biting episodes of the series while chewing on a hunk of uranium. I highly recommend it – just make sure you don’t have anything else to do for a few days…”

Battlestar Galactica Online is based on the acclaimed Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television series “Battlestar Galactica,” which aired for four seasons on Syfy. Set during the latter part of the show’s second season, the game takes the form of a previously “untold chapter,” in which both the Colonial and Cylon fleets are stranded in an uncharted area of space. Heavily damaged and low on critical supplies, both fleets must fight for control of the resources in the nearby star systems as the Colonials desperately search for a way to escape before the Cylons regain enough strength to destroy them once and for all.

“Our team’s passion for the series, and their dedication to maintaining its authenticity, enabled us to extend ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ iconic IP into a world-class MMOG,” said Heiko Hubertz, CEO and Founder, Bigpoint. “We are confident that a new standard has been achieved – no longer should browser games be considered subpar to their console or PC-installed counterparts.”

A blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay provides an engaging experience. For accuracy, assets from the television production have been integrated into the game, including Bear McCreary’s original score, select talent likenesses, and a number of ships modeled from schematics provided by the show’s creators.

At the start, players select a side – human or Cylon – and then are guided through a series of introductory tasks to learn basic flight controls and weapon systems. Once completed, players can customize their in-game avatars, receive situation and mission briefings, and begin to explore the vast universe. As players gain experience, they can unlock additional ships and learn a variety of skills. Inside capital ships and outposts, players can access the in-game market and customize all aspects their current ship – including weapons, engines, hulls, computers, and mining equipment.

For a period of six weeks, Syfy is Bigpoint’s exclusive distribution partner in the US (http://www.syfy.com/) and UK (http://www.syfy.co.uk/battlestar-galactica-game). In addition to Bigpoint’s game sites around the world, Syfy will also make the game available through its other international sites in Germany, France, Spain, Poland, and Russia, with more sites to be added in the weeks following launch.

Currently in open beta, Battlestar Galactica Online was developed by Artplant (http://artplant.no), a Norwegian studio that specializes in MMOGs. Post launch, Bigpoint will continue to add new content and features, paying close attention to community feedback. Battlestar Galactica Online is licensed through Universal Partnerships & Licensing on behalf of NBC Universal Television Consumer Products Group.

MOVIE NEWS:

THE WOLVERINE: Hugh Jackman Talks About His New Look and The Story

Back in October, Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) signed on to direct Hugh Jackman (Real Steel) in the forthcoming Wolverine movie. Since then, Aronofsky has referred to the movie as a “one-off,” and emphasized that the film isn’t a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine in any conventional sense. He also confirmed that the official title for the film will be simply, The Wolverine.

The LATimes recently got a chance to chat with Hugh Jackman, and the actor spoke a bit about the film and how his look will differ from his previous appearances as Wolverine.

Jackman said,

“Darren said with the last one, ‘Hey you looked great, but you’re so tall that in those long shots you looked kind of like Clint Eastwood, and that’s not Wolverine.” He said that Wolverine, in the comics, is powerful, stocky, you know, he’s short and thick. So he said, ‘I want you to go there, get bigger.’ He’s going to come down after he gets done with all the black-tie events over and done with.”

About finally being able to tackle the the iconic Japan storyline from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller‘s 1982 Wolverine miniseries:

“I feel like all the planets are finally aligned to make a great movie. We finally have the character and with this mythology — ever since [the 2000 Bryan Singer film] “X-Men,” when I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics, because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner, “Lauren, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this Japanese story, and I think it’s so good. It’s just genius, it’s brilliant.”

Iron Sky: It’s a Wrap! Sci-Fi Black Comedy Finishes Principal Photography

Back in December, we told you that the retro sci-fi black comedy film being developed by Finland’s Energia Productions entitled, IRON SKY was half-done, according to director, Timo Vuorensola. Now, principal photography has completed on the film and the crew needs some rest but, heading into post-production, they’re still looking for some talented visual effects pros that want to spend some time in Finland finishing the film.

It’s a Wrap! Iron Sky Finishes Principal Photography
Gold Coast/Australia – 04-Feb-2011 — Iron Sky, the Finnish-German-Australian co-production, has finished principal photography in Queensland Australia. Iron Sky is a dark science fiction comedy where Nazis fled to the Moon in 1945 – and in 2018 they are coming back. Iron Sky took about nine weeks to shoot, half of which took place in Frankfurt Germany, and the second half at the Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland, Australia.

“We have been working on Iron Sky 24/7 for years, and it’s amazing to think that the main part of my work in it is finally done” , said the director of the film Timo Vuorensola. “Of course I’ll be involved in the post production and editing too, but I can’t help but feel a bit dazed. During these years we’ve met such a big bunch of great, talented people, and it makes me a bit melancholy to think that we won’t be seeing them in quite a while – not before the premiere of Iron Sky in about one year’s time.”

“Plans for the future? In the short term, they include sleeping for 48 hours straight”, added Vuorensola.

“Wow, I feel like I had stepped out of a time machine”, said the producer of Iron Sky Tero Kaukomaa. “It feels like there’s been just a nanosecond between the start of the principal photography in Germany three months ago, and today’s wrap here in Australia. Next week we are already presenting the first promo in Berlin’s EFM.”

The Iron Sky shoot was surrounded by natural catastrophes both in Germany and especially in Australia. In Germany the last shooting day had to be transferred to Australia because of a sudden massive snow storm. In Australia some of the outdoor location shoots had to be moved into studio because of the flooding. A day and a half after the first location was shot in downtown Brisbane, the whole area was under water. In the last week of the shoot cyclone Yasi hit the northern part of the state, but didn’t cause disruptions to filming.

“It was great to know that we were snug and dry in studio with all this happening around us,” said the Australian producer Cathy Overett. “And we are delighted with the end result. We’ve had a great team on the shoot here and it shows in the production values. The performances from our cast and the footage we’ve assembled so far promise a film that will punch well above its modest budget.”

“The shoot itself was a child’s play for the visual effects team,” said the visual effects producer Samuli Torssonen. In fact, Samuli and his assistant Juuso Kaari were instrumental on set in ensuring the lighting, image capture and management of the vast green screens were spot on in capturing the key footage needed to build on with CGI. This included directing a number of plate shots himself, both in studio and on location. “But now the real work is about to begin for me and my crew. After the shoot we will take the project to Tampere, Finland, where our 15 person team is eagerly waiting for the final cut, so we can start crunching the frames on the 500 very ambitious special effects shots of Iron Sky.”

“We are still looking for talented visual effects professionals who know they way around Maya, Lightwave, Nuke etc – if you are looking for a job and don’t mind moving to cold, dark Finland, send us your showreel: jobs@ironsky.net“
