TV News:

TV THIS WEEK: It’s an Observer-filled Fringe, Being Human and more!

After four years, will we finally find out what those Fringe Observer dudes are all about? Let’s hope so, especially since Fox’s Fringe is taking a month off after Friday’s episode. This week we’ll also have the return of BBC America’s Being Human for a fourth season, which joins Syfy’s Being Human on the schedule.
And one of the 63s gets poisonous on Alcatraz, Kenzi eats some toxic soup on Lost Girl, a missing crew member is found alive on The River, Ghost Hunters International returns for a new season and heads to Peru, LeVar Burton guest-judges on Face Off, Reese plays it rich on Person of Interest, it’s Dukes of Hazzard time for Archer, Nick and Monroe discover a creature fight club on Grimm, Merlin’s magic won’t cure an illness outbreak on Merlin, Syfy embraces its inner fairy tale with the back-to-back original films Black Forest and Witchslayer Gretl, and things come to a head between Rick and Shane on The Walking Dead.
Here’s what we have to look forward to this week on sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal and spy-fi TV.

Walking Dead’ ratings hugeness continues

Sunday’s The Walking Dead continued to shamble towards ratings victory.
The “Triggerfinger” episode (where — hey — stuff happened!) delivered 6.9 million viewers for its first airing and a total of 8.5 million for the night including its repeat. Among the adult demo, a total of 5.7 million tuned in.
Yes, this is down 16 percent from last week’s mega-rated sorta-premiere episode, where WD picked up after its winter hiatus. But these numbers are still huge so…

Interview with David Hewit on Blastr.com

If David Hewlett cracked you up as Dr. Rodney McKay on Stargate: Atlantis, wait’ll you meet the REAL David Hewlett! We’re thrilled that he’s agreed to join us regularly here at Blastr to answer your questions and share whatever happens to be on his mind.
Greetings, people of Earth… and the rest of you! The friendly folks at Blastr have asked me to return and natter, once again, about sci-fi and my geeky world of nerd …
I’ve just surfaced from more writing-induced exile, clutching the latest draft of my Debug script and wondering why people outside my head don’t do what I command of them. I’m back writing, directing and acting in this puppy because I am a glutton for punishment, and apparently I’m cheaper divided into thirds! Speaking of fractions, Jane, my lovely wife and better 3/4 is working her producorial magic along with those devils at Copperheart Entertainment and we’re hoping to have that movie dancing before your eyeballs, soonish! That or I’m shooting it all in a cardboard spaceship with the cast of my son’s Kindergarten class … an electronics kit, some LEDs and a couple of laser pointers and that may be even more genius than what we’ve already got!
Me and my Stargate sibling Kate Hewlett (I’m in legal proceedings to have her change her name … people keep thinking we’re related!?) didn’t have the money to shoot a real pilot for our Assassidate series so after joking about not being able to afford anything more expensive than a Skype call, we filmed it as a Skype call … the first two nerdy episodes of Assassidate are now available on our YouTube channel.
Still working all the angles on Starcrossed as well! We’re in an exciting place with a couple of companies right now and hoping it will all come together in 2012 … that said, I’ve learned (from painful and expensive medical experience) not to hold my breath!
Now to your questions…

What was your favorite book of 2011?

Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow was the novel that really stuck with me last year. Barlow writes like Michael Ondaatje but about werewolves (I’m not doing it justice but that’s the easiest description). Poetic, brutal and beautiful!
The sad thing is that I only ever read novels in bed and now only on the iPad, and thanks to Netflix and iTunes my reading time is getting eaten up more and more by movies and brilliant sci-fi television, like the UK series Misfits!

Do you miss McKay?

Not really, I’m around him every day! As I clean my teeth … as I give my full head of lush hair its twice-daily 100 strokes of the hairbrush … as I hear his dulcet tones fill the empty house with his charming and astute complaints. I do miss Stargates and wormholes and ZPMs and chatty missions and aliens and saving the universe … and sometimes even Joe Flanigan. 😉

If you could be any character on Stargate, who would you be and why? It can’t be McKay.

That’s easy! I’d be Rod … because he’s a cool McKay from a parallel universe!

Will there ever be the Stargate: Atlantis TV movie mentioned a while ago?

Yes! There is going to be a Stargate: Atlantis movie. Unfortunately I’ll be making it by myself in my basement. Just need to raise the funds necessary to purchase all of our action figures, and then build some kind of trap to stop them from clogging my toilet, which (once festooned with colorful chevrons) will serve as the Stargate.
Sorry, that’s all I’ve got in the way of news for you when it comes to a Stargate Atlantis movie.

What’s your favorite science fiction/fantasy monster?

Without a doubt, Giger’s Alien. So naturally I’m dying to see what they’ve come up with for Prometheus. Which also stars one of my favorite actors, Idris Elba (check him out in the UK TV series Luther!)

If you could choose any profession outside the film and TV industry, what would you like to do? (Let me guess—babysitting!)

Actually, I have discovered that while I am totally in love with my child (who is naturally perfect), I still don’t like other people’s children!
While most of you, I know, are probably thinking male supermodel, I’m going to go with computer programmer. Low-level languages and assembly stuff, preferably dealing with systems security would be my choice. I could still release a sexy calendar of pinups once a year to keep up with the modeling, right?

And finally: How does your hair grow so quickly?

I don’t have an answer for this, but I just really liked the question!

Peace be in the galaxy, fools!

Movie News:

Three More Join the Cast of ENDER’S GAME

Earlier this month, we brought you the news when award-winning actress Viola Davis (The Help) joined the cast of the long awaited big screen adaptation of the Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel Ender’s Game as a psychologist who oversees the children during training, and develops games to test their skills.
Now, Deadline reports that three more thespians have joined the cast.
Nonso Anozie (Conan the Barbarian, Game of Thrones), Stevie Ray Dallimore (Joyful Noise) and Andrea Powell (The Gates) are the latest additions, and will portray Sergeant Dap, Ender’s father John and Ender’s mother Theresa respectively.
About Ender’s Game:

Set in Earth’s future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien race also known as the “Buggers”). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist, Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed.

Ender’s Game is slated to hit theaters on March 15th, 2013.

Lost And Unproduced Star Trek TOS Episode ‘He Walked Among Us’ By Norman Spinrad, Unearthed After 45 Years

By Captain Pyke | February 19, 2012 – 11:12 pm

Many of you know Norman Spinrad as an award winning science fiction novelist as well as the writer of the TOS classic “Doomsday Machine”. Up until recently, Norman’s second, unproduced and ill-fated, Star Trek episode “He Walked Among Us” was thought to be lost to the ages.
Norman explains: “I thought the text of my original version–written on a typewriter!–was lost forever until recently a fan asked me to autograph a faded copy he had bought somewhere. I did, and in return he sent me a pdf off a scan”
“This screenplay was commissioned by Gene Roddenberry as a vehicle for Milton Berle as a serious actor and [Gene] also sent me to an overgrown backlot village set he wanted to try to write into the script.”
Norman continues: “This original version was rewritten into an unfunny comedy by the line producer Gene Coon apparently unaware that Uncle Miltie was also a serious dramatic actor and a good one. It was so bad that I complained to Roddenberry: This is so lousy, Gene, that you should kill it! I told him: You can’t, you shouldn’t, shoot this thing! Read it and weep!”

“Gene did, and he agreed with me. I killed my second Star Trek, which, down through the years has cost me tens of thousands of dollars in lost residuals.”
With the recent unearthing of “He Walked Among Us”, Norman has made the script available to Trek fans through Amazon.
Just as a side not, the script for “He Walked Among Us” has nothing do with the novel written years later by Norman Spinrad.
We’d like to give special thanks to Mr. Spinrad for emailing us about this awesome find. We’ll definitely be purchasing a copy and you can get your copy here.

Watch: William Shatner Talks Broadway on ‘The View’

By Brian Wilkins | February 21, 2012
On Monday, Star Trek‘s original Captain Kirk, William Shatner appeared on ABC’s morning talk show, The View.
During his appearance, Shatner discussed his return to Broadway after 50 years with his new show, Shatner’s World, with the show’s hosts Joy Behar, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Whoopi Goldberg.
He discussed making some adjustments to the show, since it’s debut in Australia and last year’s Canadian tour. When the opportunity presented itself to bring the show to Broadway, Shatner said he had to bring it to a “higher standard.”
Shatner said his biggest fear was the possibility of the show failing and people walking out while he was on stage.
He said when the show opened he received “great notices” and after all the worry, he began thinking about “women and food — the important things.”
“They can expect to be entertained of course.” Shatner said, discussing what fans can expect from the show.
