Iron Sky
(1/1)
Jarrak:
Iron Sky is the long awaited "big" budget production from the guys and gals who produced the Star Trek / B5 feature a few years ago called "Star Wreck: In The Pickinning".
The movie is set a few years in the future during an election year for the US president who sends men to the moon as pretty much a publicity stunt, on landing on the dark side they discover a huge mine and structures and yes Nazi's. The movie than follows the consequences of the discovery both on Earth and on the Moon as both the President and Fuhrer manoeuvre their forces but for different reasons.
The movies story is reasonable with plenty of humour and political satire, some of it subtle some not so much but on the whole as long as you treat as a "b" movie then there is fun to be had. The acting from some established performers is solid if unspectacular (direction and writing effects that) but the movie does score good points for it's soundtrack and CGI/Practical effects sequences.
If you compare it to a decent syfy saturday genre flick then it certainly stands head and shoulders above them but from what I've read the budget would reflect that while still being in the realm of a well financed indie flick. Overall I enjoyed the movie and well at some point watch it again, it's extensive green screen and location work adding to the movies atmosphere as well as the mixture of languages spoken (well two of them) and of course the Black Astronaut surrounded by the Nazi's not to mention the love interest which you saw coming but was still rewarding.
A fun movie and like all "b" movies don't judge them against $200 mill Spielberg or Cameron productions, that's missing the point ;D
Iron Sky got a limited theatrical run in various countries leading upto it's DVD and Blu-ray but I suspect unlike it's predessors which got released for nothing and generated cash from subsequent retail offerings Iron Sky will eventually lose money. It's not a bad movie but cost versus return I fear is out of balance relying now on disk sales especially in the age of acquiring content.

Witherin:
I have to say I wasn't all that impressed with it. To me it never could quite make up it's mind what sort of film it was. You'd see the occasional influence of the old Blacksploitation flics of the 70's, and a couple of references to the campy Nazi Women's Prison films of the same era. There was certainly an attempt at political satire and an obvious hint towards Sarah Palin in the role of the President Elect. But overall I just didn't find it funny. Nor all that entertaining, even when trying to tell myself it was purposely intended to be a "B" movie.
The only bright elements were the extrapolations of how the Nazi technology would have developed in such a harsh environment. Although we'll leave aside the whole bit of how they managed to sneak off the planet without anyone noticing.
So... if someone else is willing to buy it and lend it to you to see and you've nothing better to watch. Certainly. Watch it. Otherwise, in my opinion (and of course it's only mine), give it a miss...

I watched about a half of it then stopped. Not my cup of tea I guess.
