We went back to 1988 to revisit a movie we remembered as science fiction.

And we came away asking:

Is Alien Nation actually a science-fiction movie?

On this episode of the SciFi Diner Podcast, we revisit Alien Nation, starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin—a film about an alien population trying to build a new life on Earth after escaping slavery.

There’s a lot here that still works.

The relationship between Sykes and George. The film’s exploration of prejudice and assimilation. The idea of an entire displaced population trying to find its place in human society. And underneath the buddy-cop story are some surprisingly serious questions about immigration, racism, identity, and what happens when fear of outsiders becomes part of everyday life.

But here’s where our conversation took an unexpected turn:

Take away the aliens…and how much science fiction is actually left?

Because the deeper we got into Alien Nation, the more it felt like a fairly conventional 1980s police drama wearing science-fiction clothing.

So does using aliens to explore human prejudice make something science fiction?

Or does science fiction need the speculative element to fundamentally change the story being told?

We didn’t necessarily agree on everything, but by the end we reached a pretty surprising conclusion about a movie that’s been sitting comfortably on the science-fiction shelf for nearly four decades.
